The Early Bird Gets the Worm

You have probably heard this saying, and it doesn’t just apply to waking up early in the day. It also applies to acting early when it comes to things like professional service for your air conditioner. When you schedule service early in the season, you get ahead of the spring rush that we always experience.

You can schedule service more on your terms and around things you already have planned. As the season ramps up, we will have fewer and fewer service appointments available and will be booking farther out as demand increases.

Key Inspection Points During Professional AC Maintenance

Check Cooling Capability

The refrigerant lines are responsible for absorbing heat and channeling it out of your home to cool down the air. These lines run from the indoor unit where the evaporator coil is located to the outdoor condenser unit. to the indoor evaporator coil. The lines outside are especially susceptible to damage. Things that we check include:

  • Refrigerant line insulation to ensure that there is adequate protection
  • Refrigerant levels to levels remain high enough for effective cooling
  • Both the indoor and outdoor coils for signs of ice buildup or dirt that may be blocking cooling ability

Ensure Proper Airflow

Airflow can be impacted for a number of reasons, so we will pay close attention to things like:

  • Your air filter to see if it is good quality and being changed out on time
  • Fan blades for signs of bending or other damage
  • Bearings and gears for relubrication needs
  • Making sure the motor is completely secure and all of the connections are tight
  • Checking the attached ductwork for any leaks or signs that it has shifted around

Check Initial Start-Up

How your AC turns on can tell us a lot about the operation. Things we consider during that initial start-up for a cooling cycle include:

  • Listening for any unusual sounds like humming or clicking
  • Check the capacitor for signs of aging
  • Test safety functions like the shutoff box and overflow safety switch

Examples of other AC maintenance steps include:

  • Testing your thermostat and recalibrating it if needed
  • Checking the foundation that both your indoor and outdoor units sit on
  • Measuring amperage during operation to ensure that it falls within the normal range
  • Measuring the temperature split, which the difference between the indoor air temperature and that of the air coming from vents
  • Checking the reversing valve on your heat pump if you have one
  • Cleaning the cabinet of the unit and rinsing the outdoor unit
