How Zone Control Can Make Your Air Conditioner More Efficient

Cooling season is here, and you’re probably already taking steps to make sure that your air conditioner is up to the task of keeping your home comfortable all summer long. Maintenance and duct sealing are nice, but they aren’t the only way to make your air conditioner more effective this summer. Read on to find out more about zone control and the benefits that it provides.

What Is Zone Control?

A zone control system uses a series of dampers installed throughout the ductwork of a home. The ducts are split into different zones by the dampers, which can open and close to direct air through them. Each zone has its own thermostat, which is hooked up to both the dampers in its zone and the air conditioning system. When you require air conditioning, it simply opens the appropriate dampers and turns on the system.

Advantages of Zoning Your HVAC System

Zone control offers you the advantage of being able to modulate how much air conditioning each part of your home receives, without affecting the rest of it. Normally, an air conditioner conditions either all of the home or none of it. This leads to many uncomfortable hot and cold spots throughout the house, due to differences in insulation between rooms. It also causes a lot of energy to be wasted on empty rooms, which don’t need any air conditioning at all. With a zone control system installed in your home, you can make sure that the only parts of the home that get air conditioning are the ones that need it. This will make your home more comfortable, and more energy efficient at the same time.
